Story
Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch. When the news reaches Russia, his fairy tale is threatened when his parents travel to New York to annul the marriage. Sean Baker wanted to hire Yura Borisov after seeing him in Kupe Br. 6 (2021). SCREAM!. Daddy AF Written and performed by Catherine Slater (aka Slayyter). The hype around Anora is huge and it lived up to expectations. I had no idea what to expect other than combining all three Sean Baker films in my head and thinking that maybe this would be somewhere in the middle of them all (The Florida Project, Red Rocket, and Tangerine – all great films, auteur style, and all about sex workers). ). It had a similar tone and focus, but beyond that, Anora was a new beast in her own right. I will say that there was A LOT more of the Safdie brothers in the movie than I expected!
You have your fun, your conflict, and your ending
Lots of people yelling over each other for a very long time! Very tense ! The film unfolds in three acts, like many great films. I initially felt it would be a bit like Boogie Nights in terms of structure, and I would say that was pretty accurate. Without I’m talking too much about it, I will say that the ending was the whole movie for me, and my girlfriend agreed. You have a two-hour experience that is mostly entertaining and mostly fascinating, it all feels a bit mushy while offering a lot of detail about the sex work experience, but it all adds up. makes it fun until you get to the end.
Mikey Madison is fantastic as Anora
Instead of an ending that neatly wraps everything up in a nice little bow, it’s an ending that unties the bow, opens the box, and leaves you with the RAW reality of it all. I was a little in awe, soaking up the very specific energy of the packed room as the quiet closing credits rolled and people slowly (very quietly) started to leave the theater. When I saw the commercials for the movie, I expected a cheerful, sweet girl – but she plays a tough, driven, smart girl who is VERY New York, and that was enjoyable surprise. Anora is mostly a likable character, but not always, and that only adds to her humanity and the overall realism and complexity of her functionality as a main character. You’ll experience a rollercoaster of ups and downs with her, and the depth feels very real. She’s also extremely HOT in this one The movie has a LOT of SEX. The entire cast is fantastic, but new faces Mark Eidelshtein and Yura Borisov leave the strongest mark as talented actors who deserve much more acting in the future.
It’s really great to see this film doing well
Eidelshtein stole the show as the most likely rich guy on a wild trip, and Borisov’s nuanced presence was loud AF without needing to many words. I definitely think this is one of Baker’s two best films to date, probably his best and one of the best films of 2024. The house was completely packed on Monday night at 9:30 and I hear the opening weekend numbers were among the highest this year. This is the kind of original, honest, essential filmmaking that needs to be seen, celebrated, and supported, and it’s a pleasure to see it happening. I can’t wait to see Mikey Madison’s career blossom after this and I can’t wait I’m waiting to see more Sean Baker movies.
